There are times in one’s life when a particular title will tickle your funny bone, and the one the USCCB put out about loving one’s neighbor in an Election Year caused me to chuckle out loud.  It is easy to love a neighbor who agrees with you 100% of the time, but what about the neighbor who disagrees with your vision of OUR country 50% of the time?  Or worse, consider  the neighbor who resorts to flinging insults about your intellectual capabilities when you try to engage him/her in a discussion of current events?  Not so easy to love them then is it?

Remember those  topics you should never bring up in polite society.. Religion and Politics?  Well, the USCCB now is recommending we do just that!  We need to read and understand exactly what is at stake this election year.  This 45 page missive needs to be read by every Catholic in the country, every citizen who wants to understand why our Church leaders are adamant about our duty to become engaged in the political discussion.

Facts matter, and that is why it is imperative you grab a cup of tea and settle back to read their pamphlet.  Our diocese in Cleveland is holding forums throughout Sept and October explaining what is contained in the attached pamphlet.  Part 1 deals with the U.S. Bishops’ Reflection on Catholic Teaching and Political Life.  Part 2 explains How to Apply Catholic Teaching to Major Issues:  A Summary of Policy Positions of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops  Part 3 explains the Goals for Political Life: Challenges for Citizens, Candidates, and Public Officials.

Read the pamphlet!  Become Educated!  Address the concerns of our Church leaders in your discussions with neighbors! Become involved in the discussion so you can be part of the solution!

And on that note –  Remember to love one another, especially those that disagree with you.  Everyone is entitled to their opinions – but opinions need to be based on fact, not hype or political advertisements.  Education is the key.  Awareness comes when people are educated with the facts.
